Alum bay
is well known for its multi-coloured sand cliffs
and the area in general leading up to the Needles
Old Battery has
stunning views across the Solent. The beach is no
longer used for bathing.
Local info: on
the clifftop there is an amusement park, the Needles
Pleasure Park (some say
quite an eyesore amongst such beautiful scenery)
and Alum Bay Glass where tourists can view glass-blowing.
During the summer season a chair lift takes tourists
to the pebbly beach below, where there is a pontoon
for boat trips around the Needles, alternatively,
a footpath leads down to the beach.
Parking: There
is a large car park on the clifftop.
Ferry: The
Lymington to Yarmouth passenger and car ferry, Wightlink,
takes about 30 minutes to make the crossing to Yarmouth, Isle of Wight.
Bus: The number 7 Southern
Vectis bus from Yarmouth stops near the beach.
