Classes for the Boating Enthusiast

RYA Marine Diesel Engine Course
Tutor: Owen Haisell. Approved RYA instructor.
Thursdays 7.30 pm - 9.30 pm. Commencing Thursday 4 November 2010
A 5 week (2 hours per week) course follows the RYA Diesel Engine Certificate course.

RYA Day Skipper Navigation (Beginners Level)

Commencing 12 October 2010
A 2-term course (22 weeks) following the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) syllabus for day skippers.

RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster (Intermediate Level):

Tuesdays 2-4 or 7.30 pm
Commencing Tuesday27 September 2010
A two term (24 weeks) course following the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) syllabus in preparation for assessment for the appropriate RYA certificate.

GMDSS/D.S.C. Short Range Certificate Marine VHF Radio
Tutor: Keith Cromar. Approved RYA instructor and radio examiner.
Next Course: Autumn 2010 (Date to be confirmed)
A one-day training and certification course for persons who are going to use a modern DSC Marine VHF radio. This certificate is a legal requirement. Using a marine radio without obtaining this certificate can result in a court appearance and fines.



Patchwork and Quilting

Traditional Patchwork and Quilting

This ten week course is for anyone who would like to learn how to make a patchwork quilt. Working by hand and machine we will explore different techniques and build on existing sewing skills to make stunning original work.

Tap and modern stage dancing for adults and children. Any age may apply. Over 50's tap also available.

Jo Jingles
Music, Movement and Singing Fun Classes
From 6 months to school age. Classes during term times in the Phoenix Room on Wednesday mornings from 9.45 am - 12.45 pm. Jo Jingles teaches children to play percussion instruments expressively, to sing songs and find rhythm to move and dance to. All great fun!

Computer Classes

Courses take place in the Community Centre's Computer Education Room. This has 12 computers using Windows XP and the most commonly used Microsoft programmes. A modern home computer is essential to enable students to practice between classes each week.


Getting Started on the Computer (Beginners)
Wednesdays 12.30 - 2.30 pm commencing 22nd September 2010.
Tutor: Karen Hulme
A beginners level course designed to enable the older learner to start with the basics of home computing. Letters, spreadsheets, e-mail etc. (Not suitable for those with a MAC).

Organising Photographs on the Computer
Wednesdays 12.30 - 2.30 pm commencing 8 September 2010
Tutor: Karen Hulme
A 4-week course for those with basic computer knowledge. The course offers instructions and tips on uploading your photographs from your camera, phone or memory stick, onto the computer. You will be able to create folders for your photos and name them. Printing and sending photos via electronic mail will be included.

Digital Camera and Image Manipulation
Tuesdays 12.00 pm to 2.00 pm (beginners). Commencing Tuesday 21 September, 2010
Tutor: Melvyn Gates
This course is designed for the digital camera owner. How to get the best from your camera by using your computer to manipulate and improve your photographs. Layout and printing techniques, etc. using Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Paint, Microsoft Publisher, Corel Draw, Photosuite etc. Basic knowledge of how to use a computer and Microsoft XP essential.

A practical art course for those who have done a beginners course and want to further their artist skills.


Improvers Watercolour Art

Tuesdays 2.30 - 4.30 pm.
This course will provide further introduction to watercolour art and is intednded for those with a little previous experience who want to improve their watercolour skills. Previous attendance at a beginners class is desirable for those joining this class.
