  Squatter settlements on New Forest common land was a regular feature in the eighteenth century, the East Boldre settlement had probably grown up when the ship building industry at Bucklers Hard was flourishing.East Boldre Website
It was stated in the vestry minutes of 1797, that a number of encroachments being made in the forest within the Parish by the erection of mud cottages and the inability to suppress them without the assistance of the parish, it was resolved that a sufficiency of men be hired to aid throwing out the encroachments, at the expense of the poor rate.
